Post subject: All about BC Transmutes

|
Since I've become a Transmutation Master in BC, figured I'd post a little info about transmute mastery and primal transmutes in here to let people know a bit more about it...
In outland, there are no elemental fires, waters, etc., and no Essence of Fire, Water, etc.
Instead, you can collect Motes of <element>. If you collect 10 of these Motes, you can make them into a Primal <element>. You don't even need to be an alchemist to do this.
The Elements that are out there so far are:
Air
Earth
Fire
Water
Mana
Life
Shadow
You've probably run across some of these already - Shadow is particularly common since it drops from Demons, and there's no shortage of them in Outland!
When first training alchemy up past 300, the only transmute that is available is the vendor-bought recipe Transmute: Primal Might. This takes 1 each of Primal Air, Earth, Fire, Water and Mana to create 1x Primal Might. It's a high-end item, used in top-level recipes.
To get further transmutes, you need reputation with various factions. Here's what's available through reputation:
Transmute: Primal Air to Primal Fire (Revered with Sha'tar)
Transmute: Primal Fire to Primal Earth (Revered with Kurenai)
Transmute: Primal Earth to Water (Revered with Sporeggar)
Transmute: Primal Water to Primal Air (Revered with Cenarion Expedition)
There are six further transmutes to be found:
Transmute: Primal Fire to Primal Mana
Transmute: Primal Mana to Primal Fire
Transmute: Primal Earth to Primal Life
Transmute: Primal Life to Primal Earth
Transmute: Primal Water to Primal Shadow
Transmute: Primal Shadow to Primal Water
Each of the six transmutes above can only be "discovered" by doing other transmutes. In other words, for every of the outland transmutes that you do, there is a small chance (something like 1 in a 1000 or less) that you can unlock one of the recipes above. The same thing is true of some top end flasks and potions - making elixirs/flasks or potions can unlock the recipe for them.
Transmute Mastery
What does being a Transmutation Master actually mean? Well, it doesn't improve the cooldown unfortunately - still 24 hours on any of the transmutes - but it does mean that every time you perform a transmute, you have a chance of creating extra items. In other words, if you do a Transmute Primal Might, you have a chance of creating additional Primal Mights for free. I personally have seen this be anything from 1 to 3 extra so far, with something like a 33% chance of the extras occurring.
If you choose any of the alchemy specialisms, it does not prevent you from learning the other recipes out there - unlike Blacksmithing or Leatherworking specialisms for example - it only gives a chance to create extra items.
Hope this helps explain some of the missing bits of the puzzle
